Portrait

There is always a risk in surrounding art with words, especially the words of the artist, because they can limit the viewer from having a more adventurous and personal experience with the work. With that in mind, I hope that my painting has many threads which a viewer can choose to unravel and follow in different directions. Among the threads I strive to weave with are: an interest in creating a tension between more or less realistic subject matter and a strong abstract structure which is the true carrier of most of the painting's meaning; a belief in the power of the small, often ignored, moment to convey a larger emotional landscape; and the pleasure of exploring the beauty, interest and meaning of visual language.
